In the mountain range itself, we can find up to six fountains: Los Conejos, El Alcornoque, Las Preñás, Portorrubio, Las Canalejas and La Teja. In any case, some are seasonal and others permanent. They are examples of how rainwater filters down the mountain until it emerges in the foothills when it meets the barrier of the clayey materials that make up the ‘raña.’
These mineral springs are closely linked to Alcoba and its people. At least since 1576, El Alcornoque has been supplying the town, the waters of Portorrubio have medicinal properties for both people, and the cattle. Las Canalejas irrigated the vegetable gardens, and supplied the washing places, authentic centres of social relations, while Las Preñás is attributed with fertility properties.
All year long.
